Container terminal Rijeka Gateway officially opened
Rijeka, September 29, 2025 - Rijeka Gateway, the most modern container terminal in this part of Europe, has officially commenced operations. The terminal is powered entirely by renewable energy sources. The grand opening ceremony gathered more than 300 guests, including representatives and executives from A.P. Moller - Maersk, APM Terminals, and the ENNA Group. The Rijeka Gateway project is the result of a partnership between APM Terminals and the ENNA Group, with an investment worth €380 million – the largest private investment in logistics infrastructure in Croatia’s history and a significant step forward for the resilience of European trade. In addition to company representatives, the ceremony was attended by officials from the Government of the Republic of Croatia and the Kingdom of Denmark – Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, Minister of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure Oleg Butković, and Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen.
The highlight of the event came when Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, APM Terminals CEO Keith Svendsen, and ENNA Group CEO Boštjan Napast joined guests on stage and symbolically pressed a button, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Rijeka and Croatia.
“The potential of this terminal is enormous, and it must be fully utilized. Our goal is to strengthen the ports of the Northern Adriatic and enhance their competitiveness compared to other European ports, especially those in the North Sea. We are geographically well-positioned, closer to the Far East and closer to the heart of Europe. We have the knowledge and maritime tradition. It’s time to restore Rijeka’s position among the leading ports of the Northern Adriatic and bring it back onto the global logistics map. The next crucial step toward unlocking its full potential is the construction of the lowland railway,” said Boštjan Napast, CEO of the ENNA Group.
The construction of the lowland railway was also announced by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković: “For the Port of Rijeka to reach its full potential, a modern, state-of-the-art railway, namely, the lowland route is essential. This is the next phase of major infrastructure investments that will contribute to making Rijeka one of the three major transport hubs of the Northern Adriatic.”
Rijeka Gateway is more than just a terminal – it is a new port of the future, strengthening Croatia’s and Europe’s transport connectivity while bringing smart, sustainable, and digital solutions to global logistics.
