ENNA Group recognized a great potential for investment in projects related to geothermal energy in Croatia. Alongside the Geo Power Zagocha project near Slatina (link), ENNA is also developing a geothermal power plant project near Babina Greda.
Fields Babina Greda 1 and 2, which are located on a single geothermal reservoir forming a geological and hydrodynamic unit, are currently at different stages of the exploration phase.
Exploration work on the Babina Greda 1 field has been completed, and a contract for exploitation is expected to be signed by the end of 2024. Meanwhile, on the Babina Greda 2 field, it is still necessary to drill an exploration well to conclude the exploration phase in that field. The start of drilling for the exploratory well Babina Greda GT-1 is expected in mid-2025.
The plan is to develop both fields and build a geothermal power plant with a connected capacity of 15 MW, and along with electricity production, a whole range of possibilities for the development of the area will be opened up.
In the exploration field Babina Greda 1, there is a well that had been inactive for a long time. It was an excellent source of information about the reservoir properties but also posed a challenge in the preparatory work. The main access road to the construction site in Babina Greda was difficult to pass, and it was mostly used by local farmers to access the fields, so the first task was to arrange the access roads and prepare the site for further work.
The Babina Greda 1 borehole was last tested in 2002 and it was determined that the geothermal reservoir was not commercially viable. But, with the change in conditions in the energy market, the commercial viability of geothermal fields has significantly improved.
There are 2 geothermal water reservoirs in the fields Babina Greda 1 and 2. Tests were conducted on a shallower, "colder" reservoir, yielding better-than-expected results, while the deeper reservoir has much greater potential for commercial electricity production and the use of remaining thermal energy for industrial facilities, greenhouse fruit and vegetable production, and heating surrounding settlements.
ENNA Geo, a company within the ENNA group that develops geothermal power plant projects in Croatia, took over another exploration field in Babina Greda in April 2024. Geo Power Babina Greda, a subsidiary of Enna Geo, purchased 90 percent of the shares in the company Geothermal Sources from the Vukovar-Srijem County and the municipality of Babina Greda, while the county and the municipality retained five percent each. The shares were sold through a public call, and the decision was confirmed by the Assembly of Vukovar-Srijem County and the Babina Greda Municipal Council.
